After Action Review

So 2 near misses later, here I am back home preparing to get to work on the website.

We cycled from the Shell station at my house out towards the MRT tracks, then after the NEWater treatment plant, turned towards ECP and onto the endless road. The upslope there was a killer, but after reaching the top and gliding down for a full minute at high speed, gave me a rush as the night winds chilled my face to the bone. Not to mention the cars whizzing by had no intention of slowing down, that was the scary bit. Perhaps they thought that during the "seventh month" there wouldn't be night cyclists.

Don't move! (That's before the police came) Me, Andy, Ho Wai, Jeremy

Along the way, we stopped to take pictures using a Fujifilm Finepix and Konica Minolta Dimage, minus my poor Canon Powershot that is going for repairs. Of all places, we chose the perimeter fence around the airport, and before we knew it, a police squad car headed towards us and an officer took down our particulars, telling us photography was not allowed. He also warned us that the road we were embarking on is accident prone, that many cars speed there and they had recent mishaps. We kind of experienced that already, so on the return route we went another way.

Then it was on to the notorious endless road where we cycled without seeing an exit, as its name aptly suggests. We saw the Changi Airport control tower from where we were on the road, and it looked minute. We finally reached the end through sheer tenacity, and I think it was an hour into the journey already (1.30am, and we set off around 12.45am). Then we passed by a place that held many memories just 2 years back. The Singapore Ferry Terminal, where most boys had to visit and loved leaving there more than entering. It was the place where we took the fastcraft to Pulau Tekong for basic military training, and for the 4 of us yesterday, SISPEC training as well. No one seemed to be on guard as the whole place was fenced and locked up for the night.

After the Ferry Terminal, we reached Changi Beach Park and did not manage to see any couples making out there (boo). We also lost track of the cars and motorbikes that zoomed past us that we got sick of worrying about the next vehicle that approached and whether or not the driver was i)drunk ii)asleep iii)plain reckless. We cycled on the pavement for a while, in the park anyway. We took more photos on a bridge before going to Changi Village for some supper.

I had roti prata with onion and one with egg, together with a glass of ice cold teh tarik that Ho Wai recommended. Told them about SLC and they seem pretty enthusiastic about, let's see if they will be helping out next year. That they will get to know more HK girls may be their vested interest. HA! Not many of us have HK classmates, having come to Singapore so early in our childhood. The first near miss occured on the way to supper. My front wheel slipped into a deep gap in the pavement and I did an emergency brake. Lucky Jeremy who was behind stopped in time.

That's Andy and me, see the cars that still roam the streets at night?

Jeremy and Ho Wai, with the legendary Teh Tarik in their hands!

After the supper we headed home, 3am or thereabout. We went via Tampines St 32, the bus 18 route past Safra and into Bedok Reservoir, sending Andy home first. The second near miss happened after I spotted a toad on the pavement. Having narrowly missed running over it, I looked back to tell them about it, then the bike drifted right off the pavement and I flew off the bike. Luckily I cleared the off-balance bike in time, but both the blinker lights were destroyed, including the one Baby bought for me for Valentine's Day in February (sob sob). Lucky I still have the receipt for it, should be able to claim warranty, since there wasn't even direct impact - the handlebars went sideways before it landed on the ground. No more events until we reached home and called it a night. 5am into this Saturday morning.

Nevertheless, the new bicycle has its merits over the older, in that the suspension made the rough patches more bearable, despite it being heavier and not being able to run on its own momentum for long. Still getting used to the reversed brakes system where the right handle controls the front brakes.

More heart-stopping than the first trip, that's for sure. That's understandable as the first time, we were cycling from within East Coast Park itself so it's safer. Photos coming up! Looking forward to the next adventure!

Progress in CNM website

- discovered how to make use of nice template in Dreamweaver
- installed wordpress on cnm.sg, 4 step process that requires some reading up of instructions, and having access to the hosting provider you are using.
- started making the photo gallery

Least that'll set my mind at ease as I go night cycling later. Tomorrow will be a longer day ahead!

The Challenges Ahead:

Like any good leader, we must be forward looking. Not just looking forward to SLC 2007, but at the very near future that lies in wait. Here's the low down at what's happening from next Monday till December 4th when I finish the last paper.

NM2216: Introduction to Interactive Media. Still confused as to what it studies. I know there are guest speakers from media companies who will be coming down to preach.

NM2220: Introduction to Media Writing. I'm sure there's a lot of reading up on newspapers to remain current, and probably even a quiz on what we're reading. Hope to gain some advantage by being able to update myself via PDA on the latest news. This will help me sharpen my writing style to flaunt to the media that I will be writing to / for in future. (I secretly hope it's a "to")

NM3201: Media and Globalization. Though the word "globalization" brings back haunting memories of the geography module that I screwed up in my first semester, it is said that we can "mug" our way out. Mug I shall!

NM3215: Advertising Strategies. As its name suggests. A little background research says that the project will eat all the way till the final exam. Bless us all! I need to set aside modules to fulfill all Communication Management modules to be a PR practitioner!

Lastly, GEM2005: Film and History! The module Aaron and I have been preparing for even before I left for Hong Kong/ Shenzhen. We'd watched Harold and Kumar go to White Castle at Starbucks, showing our devotion towards independent life-long learning (boy those nude scenes were good...), and I've watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on my own.

An average of A- for every module. Since most are my core modules, I better get them right.

Believe.

And start putting beliefs into action.

Mugging into the wee hours of the night. A custom at Fudan University as I read in an article today.

So be it.

This Week In Brief

The hazards of not sleeping enough everyday: losing track of what's happened in the past few days.

Tomorrow: Prepare for the coming semester's modules & get the website prototype done! Night: midnight cycling with the Hong Kong gang, location, Changi!

Today: Went to school to return the blazer used for SLC 2006; get Baby & sis's result transcripts; met up with president of my department and talked about the deadline for the website to be done.

Yesterday: National Day, spent at Baby's house and watched a bit of Pulp Fiction to prepare for film and history module. Bought Samuel and Kelvin shorts x 2, Baby sponsored half ^^

Tuesday: Got new bike and had a test drive to the beach! (Finally! It was heavy, the old bike. Without a front wheel too!)

Monday: Caryn went to Denmark for exchange, sent her off with a slight tearfest happening at the airport. Tried again with Jeremy to bring the bike to the shop, but it was closed (after 7pm)

Sunday: Tried to bring the old bike with my brother to repair it but the shop was closed! (Rest on Sundays)

Saturday: Celebrated Churn Mun's birthday

So Thankful...

That I can do my bidding of modules here in the Student Services Centre, thank you Tungsten C, thank you WiFi, you've made my life easier. I can blog too!

Guess what, Singapore, namely NUS is hosting next year's Student Leadership Conference!! Excited and apprehensive, let's wait for the meeting and see how everything goes. Here's to seeing old friends and putting something so phenomenal together!!!!

Life as a youth, always finding excuses for living the way we want to!

New Wheels!

Here's a shot of my new bike! The shopkeeper was transferring the gear mechanism from the old bike to the new one in this picture.

It has front suspension, and an aluminium body.

All set for Friday's night cycling!!

Our bikes in the background, that's my bro Jeremy digging into an ice dessert.

We decided to take our bikes for a spin over at East Coast Park, 20 minutes away from our houses. Watching as people preparing for National Day tomorrow walk past, savouring the salty sea breeze and each other's company. Singapore's gonna be 41!

The feeling? Fantastic, never felt better, the front suspension made the ride so much more enjoyable!

Useless fact of the day: National Service (NS), or the army, started in 1967, 2 years after Singapore's independence. Will the 40th anniversary of NS bring any special changes to the system? Further reduction in service liability for the men?
